Tools for Planning and Development| Assessment of Student Work

Faculty are encouraged to use a variety of assessment methodology to gauge student learning as they progress through and complete their course work. Working with instructional technology experts provided through the FCPE, faculty receive assistance to develop assessment instruments that are appropriate for the material being covered while leveraging the distance learning environment. This could include, but is not limited to, the following assessment methods:
  • Written research papers and essays
  • Digital quizzes and exams that include multiple choice, true or false, fill-in-the-blank, multiple answer, ordering, matching, or short answer/essay
  • Proctored exams
  • Electronic portfolios that includes multimedia such as written material, digital audio or video, presentations, and links to research sources
  • Discussion board postings and student reviews and responses
  • Reflective student blogs
  • Student-created wikis on course topics
  • Student-created podcasts uploaded to Blackboard for peer review
  • Collaborative student projects and assignments completed by virtual teams
  • Case studies
Adequate verification of learners' work

Distance Learning students shall be made well aware of Adelphi University's Code of Academic Honesty and the consequences of cheating or plagiarizing their course work.

The Moodle course management system used for online courses offers several types of assessment procedures and tools. They include:
  • Turnitin anti-plagiarism software from that can analyze written assignments for potential plagiarism. Instructions and best practiced for using Turnitin.com can be found at http://academics.adelphi.edu/academicintegrity/instructions.php
  • The Moodle Test Manager enables faculty to create online exams and tests that help to limit the opportunities for cheating. These include:
    • Password-protected exam login for students
    • Exam questions randomized so that no two students take the test in the same order
    • Exam questions pulled randomly from a larger test question bank so that no two students take the exact same test
    • The ability to require students to provide written answers to questions that are personalized. For example, asking a biology student to describe characteristics for two types of trees found in their neighborhood.
    • Timed exams that allow for only a certain amount of time to complete the exam or that allow for the exam to be completed only during a certain time of day.
    • Test statistics that allow instructors to see how students answered questions. This can indicate, for example, two students who may have taken the test simultaneously and given the exact same answers.
In addition, faculty will have the option of requiring students to take exams via a proctor at their local campus or library.

Basic assessment techniques that reduce the opportunities for cheating include:
  • Varying the test formats, question sets, and subject matters from previous course sections
  • Requiring personalized written responses to exam questions
  • Asking comprehension or essay questions which require students to produce an essay-like argument in response to a question.
All faculty wishing to develop approaches to using writing as a pedagogical tool are encouraged to contact the Director of Writing Programs.
