What is a learning object repository?

Learning object repositories provide free access to a wealth of resources that support learning. Examples of the kinds of content they contain include assignments; team projects; video tutorials; rubrics, simulations; course templates; and even syllabi. Faculty can search repository databases by category or by using keywords to find appropriate instructional materials to use in their courses. Many repositories also provide a way for faculty to share their own original learning objects with others.

There are several online learning object repositories that contain instructional content specifically geared to college students. Merlot, Careo and Maricopa are three examples. Below you will find a list of 24 repositories to explore.

What are the benefits for faculty?

  • The possibilities for using learning objects are limited only by one’s imagination. Faculty can choose to use them for class assignments, extra-credit work, supplemental tutorials, and in developing online course content.
  • The wide range of media and formats available helps in accommodating students’ different learning styles.
  • Learning objects can help increase student engagement by adding variety to course activities.
  • Faculty can experiment with new lesson activities without having to spend hours developing new ideas.
  • Faculty can benefit from the work and experience of other educators without having to “reinvent the wheel.”
What are some things to consider when using learning object repositories?

No major technical skills are required to search online learning object repositories, but some of the materials found in them may require special plug-ins or software, so it's important to be aware of what technologies you and your students will have access to.
