Dr. Roni Berger,
School of Social Work has been invited by the Center for Comparative
Immigration Studies at the University of California, San Diego,
to join the Center as a Research Associate. The Center was established
in 1999 as an interdisciplinary, multinational research and training
program. It conducts multi-year research projects, holds research
conferences, workshops and seminars, hosts visiting research fellows
at both the pre- and postdoctoral levels, and publishes monographs
and working papers. Dr. Berger is the only social work professional
appointed to the Center.
Dr.
Carole Rhodes, School of Education, is the recipient
of another AACTE-Microsoft Innovative Teachers grant. This program
provides Microsoft software licenses for all Microsoft applications
and operating systems, including website creation and management
tools. The recipients of this award become part of an online "community
of practice and expertise", sharing information and best practices
about improving teacher education and student learning outcomes
through the use of technology.
Dr. Carole
Rhodes, School of Education, has been invited by the New York State
Board of Regents to review applications from teacher education programs
across the state as they apply for Regents Accreditation. For more
information about the new accreditation process for Schools of Education,
please contact Dr. Rhodes.
Dr.
Shannon Whalen, School of Education, and the Maurer Foundation
for Breast Health Education were awarded a grant from the NYS Department
of Health to provide effective community-based breast health. The
Foundation will use their highly regarded "train the trainer"
approach to establish Breast Health Educators across Queens, Nassau
and Suffolk counties. Dr. Whalen will serve as the evaluation consultant
for the program, while Drs. Friedman, Greenfield, Zarco and Weiss
will serve as content consultants.
Dr.
Shannon Whalen and Dr. Leah Fiorentino, School of Education,
are recipients of a Microsoft Innovative Teachers Program, a grant
providing software licenses to build national networks of school-university
partnerships. Shannon and Leah will work with Garden City schools,
training health and physical education teachers to integrate technology
into their curriculum and more importantly, how to involve their
students. In addition, teacher- candidates at Adelphi will be able
to observe (from their classrooms) teachers and students at Garden
City, giving them the opportunity to view best practices in education
as they happen.
Dr.
Alissa Mallow, School of Social Work, has received a
grant from the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance
Abuse, which will fund scholarships for New York City police officers
to enroll in the School's Addiction Specialist Certificate Program.
Dr.
Ronald Feingold just returned from attending a conference
in La Coruna, Spain where he was unanimously re-elected by the general
assembly as President of Association Internationale des Ecoles Superieures
d'Education Physique (AIESEP) or International Association for Physical
Education in Higher Education. The office is a four year term and
requires the oversight of the AIESEP Board, who were also elected
at the Spain Conference. Board representatives include the following
countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, England, Finland, France,
Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Spain,
and Taiwan. It is anticipated that two additional board members
will be made by presidential appointment, one representing Africa
and the other South America. Over 400 attended the World congress,
representing over fifty countries.
Besides yearly
international conferences and seminars, AIESEP is partially responsible
for the development and management of the Pre-Olympic Scientific
Congress, which will be held in Greece.
At the closing
ceremony, Ron Feingold was awarded the "Gold Cross", the
highest honor from the Federation Internationale d'Education Physique
(FIEP). The eighty-five year old organization is mainly represented
by school teachers from around the world and the "Gold Cross"
honor has only been given out to 19 people in its history.

-- the top international award from FIEP. Given to only 19 people
over the past 85 years.
Received from
the American Heart Association (Nassau), James Dowling Award for
lifetime achievment.
Received from
the New York State Association for HPERD, the State Service Aawrd
-- highest Award given by State Association for Service to the profession.
Dr. Feingold
just returned from Paris, meeting with UNESCO and Ministers and
Senior officials on physical education and sport. Over 100 countries
represented. Of the 280 in attendance, I was the only person from
the USA, since the United Statesis not a member state, but will
join in October, 2003. I was there as president of AIESEP (Asoc
internationale, des Ecoles Supierieures d' Education Physique) -
recently elected president of the International asscoaition for
Physical Education in Higher Education.
Dr. James Dooley,
Biology Department
-- has
received a President's Faculty Development Award for a project titled
"Relationships of the Tilefishes Utilizing Morphological and
Biochemical Character Analysis".
-- has been
invited to participate as a collaborator on a 5-year National Science
Foundation Grant Proposal to study the coral reef fishes of the
world covering 73 families and some 7,000 species of fishes . The
proposal is under the "Planetary Biodiversity Inventory"
(PBI) program that has a budget of $14 million to be divided up

an invited article on tilefishes in the 4-volume book series "
Fishes of the Western Central Atlantic Ocean" by the United
Nations Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO) to be coming
out next month.
Dr. James K.
Dooley is the director of the newly formed College of Arts and Sciences'
Biotechnology Advisory Board. The board is made up of 17 members
of academia, industrial and political leaders, medical researchers
and community representatives. The board will had its first meeting
at the end of January. Notable alumni members include:
Mr. Shahram Rabbani (B.A. Chemistry,'74), Founder and Chief Operating
Officer of Enzo Biochemical, Inc., also appointed to the Board of
Trustees;
Dr. Jerold M. Martin, Senior Vice President, Marketing of Pall Corporation
(B.S., Biology '73 );
Hon. Michael Balboni, State Senator (7th District) of New York (B.A.
Biology, '81); Dr. Sunny Luke, Ortec International, tissue engineering
research (M.A., Biology '81).
Dr.
Anagnostis Agelarakis and his students were the recipients
of two grants from the Greek Ministry of the Aegean which supported
a great deal their fieldwork in Paros and Samos over the summer.

Dr.
Richard Belson, Associate Professor in the School of
Social Work, presented on "Humor in Marriage Therapy"
before the social work staff of the Little Neck "Y" on
Sept. 30, 2002. On Dec. 16, he lectured at the Child Studies Center
of N.Y.U. Medical Center. He brought with him a patient who had
struggled with bulimia for fifteen years, and was now free of the
problem for the last two months after only one suggestion. The theoretical
basis of the intervention was carefully discussed.
