Welcome to the Web Page of the
Committee on Teaching and Advisement!

The Committee on Teaching and Advisement, a committee of the Adelphi Faculty Senate, promotes outstanding teaching and advisement at Adelphi. We work with the Provost's Office, the Faculty Center for Professional Excellence, the Office of Academic Services and Retention, administrators, faculty, and others on campus to sponsor, coordinate, and oversee workshops, newsletters, and various efforts related to teaching and advisement. We welcome new members from all units of Adelphi.

Brown-bag lunch discussion on teaching:
Wednesday November 30, 12-1 pm in UC215.

Special guest Provost Marcia Welsh.

Join the campaign to promote discussion of teaching at Adelphi! At its Feb. 9, 2004 meeting, the Faculty Senate passed a resolution that urges each unit (department or school) of the university to devote at least one faculty meeting a year to a discussion of teaching. In order to be effective, this resolution needs to be implemented. You can do the following:

-Encourage your department or school to schedule such a meeting soon.

-Submit ideas for topics to discuss to your department chair or school dean.

-Submit these ideas also to our Committee—we plan to distribute a list to the university to give
departments and schools some starting ideas for their discussions.

Peer Observations:

The Teaching & Advisement Committee, as part of our effort to strengthen the teaching community on campus, makes available the following list of faculty who are willing to be observed by their Adelphi faculty colleagues interested in seeing how others teach. This program is voluntary. Please contact a faculty member on the list to make arrangements before visiting a class. In addition to this being simple courtesy, the faculty member may have a particular class that he or she recommends to visit or a particular day that is not appropriate because an exam is being given.

Wondering which courses and professors to recommend to your advisees? Check out the results of the Course Evaluation Surveys completed by students for many courses in recent semesters. Results for the last academic year are now available ON-LINE through e-campus: log on to e-campus, select the Academic tab, and then select "Course Evaluations".Results from other years are available in white binders in your dean's office and at the Reserve Desk of Swirbul Library. Recommend to your advisees that they use this resource to help them in their course selections.

Note: Students who plan to become elementary or secondary school teachers cannot major in Education; they must major in a subject area while taking some specific education courses. Because requirements are complex and state requirements can change, students MUST consult both an advisor from Education and an advisor from their major subject area.

These links lead to advisement sheets for the STEP program. Note that because of recent changes, the requirements differ depending on when a student started the program. Be sure you use the right advisement sheet for each student!
