Creating Assignments

Creating Assignments

The Assignments section gives you an easy way to allow students to upload files for grading and for the instructor to create an item for the Moodle Gradebook.

Assignment Types

  • Advanced uploading of files: Students may upload multiple files, delete files mistakenly uploaded as their assignment submission and enter notes describing their submitted files. This type also allows instructors to send files back to students in response to their submissions.
  • Online Text: This assignment type asks users to type their response directly into Moodle. It can be thought of as an online essay response (although the length is at your discretion). Teachers can then access users' submissions and grade them.\
  • Upload a single file: Students will be allowed to upload only a single file of any type related to an assignment.
  • Offline activity: Add an assignment that will be completed outside of Moodle. Students can read the description and view grades of these assignments, but files cannot be uploaded. Use this option to create a gradebook item for an activity that is not submitted via Moodle (e.g. field trips, classroom presentations). For more information please see Creating an Offline Activity Assignment on page 3 of this document.

Creating an Assignment – Advanced Uploading of Files

Students may upload multiple files, delete files mistakenly uploaded as their assignment submission and enter notes describing their submitted files. This type also allows instructors to send files back to students in response to their submissions. These responses can add comments and/or corrections to a student's submitted file without the need for printing. Submission of this type of assignment must be manually finalized by the student by clicking on the ‘Submit for Marking’ button. Teachers can revert any submitted assignment back to draft form after a student has submitted a file for grading. Please see the Grading Assignments tutorial for steps on reverting submissions to drafts.

  1. Log in to your course and Turn editing on.
  2. From the drop-down Activities menu of your chosen topic, select Advanced uploading of files. #1
  3. Type in an Assignment name. #2
  4. Write a Description for the assignment. These are the questions and instructions for the students to follow. #3
  5. Then define the Grade type and the Available and Due dates for submission. #4
  6. Specify whether the students can delete a file before it is submitted for grading. #5
  7. Designate the number of files each student can upload (1 to 20).
  8. Click on Save and return to course

Important Note: Once students have hit the ‘Submit for Marking’ button they may no longer make changes to their submission. That includes uploading additional files or removing existing documents.

Creating an Assignment – Offline Activity

  1. Access the course you are teaching.
  2. Click the Turn editing on button.
  3. Select Offline activity from the Add an activity drop-down menu. #1
  4. Create an Assignment name, write a Description and define the Grade. The Available from and Due Date should be disabled. #2
  5. At the bottom of the page, click on the Save and return to course button.
