Backing Up a Course
- Log into Moodle and access the course in which you would like to create a course backup (i.e. a course archive).
- Click on Backup in the Administration block.

- On the right side, above the User Data column, click on the ‘None’ link. This will exclude all of the files placed by students in the course.

- Under Forums, deselect News forum completely.

- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and change the options next to Users to be set to None and User Files to be set to No.

- Click on the Continue button.
- At the bottom of the next two confirmation screens that appear click Continue.
- At the bottom of the next page, click on Continue.
Moodle will take you to your Backup Files folder where all backups are saved. The backup process is complete.
- Click on the newly created backup file’s name. When in doubt of which backup is the newest, use the Modified column to locate the most recent backup file.

- In the download prompt window check Save to Disk and click on the OK button to save the backup file on your desktop.
Note: If you see two vertical hooks ( ) they will achieve the same thing as the four way arrow only in a different way. To move an object with the two vertical hooks: click on the object's hooks and then click in the appropriate position for it to be moved. By default the four way arrows should appear.
Restoring a Course
To restore a previous course you must first have followed the steps above in the Backing Up a Course section of this tutorial. Follow these steps to restore a course backup into a blank course site:
NOTE: The restore process will take approximately 20 minutes. During this period you will not be able to use Moodle. Please plan your time accordingly before following these steps to restore your course into another Moodle course site.
- Log into Moodle and access the destination course you wish to restore your course materials.
- Click on Restore under the Administration panel. The Backup Files folder comes up.

Click on the Upload a file button.

- Click on Browse.
- Find the backup file on your computer saved on your desktop, select it and then press Open.
- Click on Upload this file.

Now click on Restore next to the backup file you wish to use.

Click on Yes at the next page.

- Scroll down and click Continue.

On the next page you can choose whether to restore all files, or individually select the desired course items/activities.

Next to the Restore to drop-down menu select Existing course, deleting it first.
WARNING: Only chose this option if the course does not have materials in it; if the course does have existing materials, then chose Existing course, adding data to it.

Scroll down at the bottom of the page and click on Continue.
- Click on Restore this course now! button.
- Scroll down and click on Continue. The next page will take you to the restored course with all your course materials.
Changing the Number of Modules
Each Moodle course, by default, is created with 10 modules (topics). To change the number of modules, follow these steps
- Click on Settings under the Administration panel.

- Under the Summary box, you will see a drop-down menu for Number of weeks/topics. Click on the menu and select the number of modules you want.
