I hope to pass on my enthusiasm for learning and my belief that learning is a lifelong process. I also hope that I instill a passion and desire for learning that takes students way beyond what I could ever teach them in class!

Kenya Beard

Clinical Assistant Professor, School of Nursing

Please give us a brief overview of your background, area of expertise, research, and teaching.

I began my nursing education at Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing in 1984. After obtaining my R.N. license, I worked in a variety of settings. However, I most enjoyed working in the emergency room and as a staff educator. I received my M.S. degree from Stony Brook University and I’ve worked as an adult nurse practitioner in both office settings and sub-acute rehabilitation facilities. Currently, I’m working on my Ed.D. at Dowling College.

I began my teaching career at Northport BOCES, where I taught L.P.N. students. I also taught in the R.N. program at Farmingdale State College for several years before coming here to Adelphi. Over the last seven years, I’ve taught many courses, which included anatomy and physiology, health assessment, pharmacology, and med/surg. I also teach a nursing license review course.

My area of research focuses on the utilization of innovative technology to improve patient safety and student success. I recently presented a poster on how to overcome barriers to implementing simulated technology at the National League for Nursing in Phoenix, Arizona.

How did you arrive at your decision to come to Adelphi?

There are several reasons why I opted to teach at Adelphi. However, being able to provide quality education to a diverse student population was a big factor. I personally believe that it’s extremely important for nursing schools to implement strategies to help increase the nursing workforce diversity. When I saw that Adelphi also shared this belief, I became quite motivated to join their team. Another motivating factor was the high level of innovative technology that is made available to both students and faculty. All schools want to deliver a high quality education but Adelphi has a wealth of resources to ensure that students are prepared to perform in a technologically advanced society.

What has been your experience so far?

I’m pleased that I’m teaching in a technology-enhanced room where I not only have online access to current information but I am also able to use technology to present lectures in a manner that is engaging, entertaining, and student-centered.

What do you hope to contribute? What do you feel strongly about in regards to teaching or your specialization?

I hope to contribute to the school’s success in recruiting a diverse population of students and assist the department in developing strategies to continuously exceed retention rates. In order to achieve academic success, I feel strongly that students must be active participants in the learning process and that my role is to facilitate learning. By working together, nursing graduates will be more than prepared to provide a level of care that meets the holistic needs of the clients they serve.

What do you wish to impart to your students?

I hope to pass on my enthusiasm for learning and my belief that learning is a lifelong process. I also hope that I instill a passion and desire for learning that takes students way beyond what I could ever teach them in class!
