Nothing ever stays the same at the FCPE for too long. After almost two years of excellent service as an Instructional Technologist, Shabana Figueroa has left Adelphi University to pursue a career out of state. We thank her for being a wonderful team member, for all her hard work and for the many initiatives she brought forward during her tenure at the FCPE.
We took our time in finding a versatile and qualified new addition to our team. We wanted someone who would be able to respond flexibly to the needs of our faculty. They also needed to be well experienced in providing solid advice on the many aspects of educational technology in higher education and have an intrinsic desire to keep up with changing technologies and to foster innovative and effective teaching with technology at Adelphi. After two months of an extensive search we found our match.
Please join me in welcoming our new Instructional Technologist Hector Graciano!
Hector’s message to the Adelphi community:
“I’m very excited to be a part of the Adelphi community and to be joining the FCPE team. The work here is so invigorating and I’m eager to get started.
I have a BA in English Literature & Rhetoric and Latin American Studies from SUNY Binghamton and an MA in Instructional Technology & Media from Teachers College, Columbia University. For the past six years, I’ve been involved in supporting faculty development programs that link pedagogy, classroom practice, and technology in academia. Most recently, I worked at the Office of Undergraduate Education, CUNY Central, as the Program Manager and provided support for university-wide initiatives focused on general education, faculty development, and academic support programs throughout the seventeen undergraduate campuses in New York City. Prior to that, I worked at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY, as the Assistant Director of the electronic portfolio initiative where I worked with faculty to create web-based digital collections of student’s course work linked to their professional goals and metacognitive reflections of their academic growth.
My knowledge and expertise of instructional technologies include Blackboard, podcasting (audio and video), the use of multimedia authoring tools to enhance student-authored projects (PowerPoint, digital storytelling, ePortfolios), online writing and dialogue (utilizing discussion boards, blogs, and wikis), and web-based inquiry to explore online resources through a guided process.
Adelphi seems to me like a great place to support the exciting professional development opportunities offered through the FCPE. I’m sure I will be learning a lot from my future conversations with faculty and working with my fellow colleagues here at the FCPE. As a native New Yorker, working at a campus like this one is a welcomed change from working in the fast-paced city. Similar to my undergraduate experience, the campus reminds me of the same wonderful learning environment that I had years ago filled with trees, grass, fresh air, and complimented with a great faculty body. I look forward to working with you and supporting your work in the classroom with technology.”
